Many of the Viking raiders during the Middle Ages were Danes. Prior to the 17th century Denmark was a powerful northern European nation. It lost control of southern Sweden in the 17th century along with Norway and Schleswig-Holstein, an area of present day Germany. Northern Schleswig was returned to Denmark during the 17th Century. @
